โรงพยาบาลสุขุมวิทเปิดให้บริการมายาวนานกว่า 40 ปี เดิมเป็นโรงพยาบาลของกองทหารอเมริกัน ใช้ชื่อว่า Fifth Field U.S. Army Hospital ก่อตั้งขึ้น และ เปิดดำเนินกิจการอย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ 25 กุมภาพันธ์ 2520 ด้วยทุนดำเนินการ 5 ล้านบาท จำนวนเตียง 110 เตียง และบนพื้นที่ 9 ไร่เศษ และเป็นโรงพยาบาลเอกชนแห่งแรกๆในกรุงเทพฯ ถึงวันนี้เป็นเวลา 40 ปีพอดี แต่เนื่องจากโรงพยาบาลสุขุมวิทมีอาคารที่จะรับผู้ป่วยให้พักรักษาตัวภายในโรงพยาบาลเพียงหลังเดียวซึ่งเป็นอาคารสูง 5 ชั้นและอาคารหลังนี้ได้มีการปรับปรุงภายในอาคารทำให้สามารถรองรับผู้ป่วยลดลงเหลือ จำนวนเตียง 72 เตียง อาคารใหม่มีความสูง 15 ชั้น มีพื้นที่ให้บริการกว่า 5 หมื่นตารางเมตร สามารถรองรับผู้ป่วยในได้ถึง 243 เตียง มีศูนย์บริการทางการแพทย์เฉพาะทางที่เพิ่มขึ้นในการให้บริการแก่ผู้ป่วยได้มากกว่า 2,000 รายต่อวัน โรงพยาบาลสุขุมวิท ยังคงยึดมั่นในแนวทางเดิม คือ "เน้นที่คุณภาพในการบริการ มีการจัดการดูแลสุขภาพที่เหมาะสม โดยเน้นความปลอดภัยในการดูแลรักษาเป็นหลัก เลือกใช้เทคโนโลยีที่เหมาะสมและปลอดภัย มีการพัฒนาบุคลากรและปรับปรุงสถานที่ตลอดเวลาที่ผ่านมา" จักษุเลเซอร์และความงามหัวใจ
